FPL Chip Strategy - Wildcard, Free Hit & Bench Boost Timing
Fixture-driven chip timing that auto-updates the moment FPL announces a Double or Blank Gameweek. GW1 2026/27.
The 4 chips and when to use them
| Chip | What it does | Best timed around |
|---|---|---|
| Wildcard | Unlimited free transfers for one gameweek, changes are permanent | Fixing 4+ squad problems at once, or ahead of a multi-team fixture swing |
| Free Hit | Unlimited free transfers for one gameweek, squad reverts after | A single Blank Gameweek where your normal squad has few fixtures |
| Bench Boost | Bench players' points count too | A Double Gameweek where your full 15 have good, minutes-safe fixtures |
| Triple Captain | Captain scores 3x instead of 2x | Premium attacker with a Double Gameweek or a standout single fixture |
2026/27 chip & free-transfer rules

|---|---|---|
| Normal (no chip) | 4 pts per extra transfer | min(5, unused FTs + 1) |
| Wildcard | 0 (unlimited) | Resets to 1 |
| Free Hit | 0 (unlimited, reverts) | Preserves pre-Free-Hit FT count exactly - no extra +1 |

Two-set system: GW1-19 and GW20-38 each get their own full set of 4 chips. Unused first-half chips do not carry over.
How the advisor works
Runs purely from fixture data - no team load required, so it works the moment you land on the page. It reads live fixture counts per gameweek from the FPL API and auto-detects Double and Blank Gameweeks as soon as FPL announces them, ranking chip-timing scenarios by expected value rather than gut feel.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I play my FPL Wildcard?
Wildcard when you need to make 4+ transfers to fix your squad, or ahead of a positive fixture swing for 3+ teams at once. The engine reads live fixture data to auto-detect Double and Blank Gameweeks and factors them into the recommendation - a Wildcard timed right before a DGW-heavy run is usually stronger than one played reactively after a bad gameweek.
When should I play Bench Boost?
Bench Boost scores your full 15-man squad instead of just your Starting XI, so it wants a gameweek where all 4 bench players have good fixtures and are guaranteed minutes - classically a Double Gameweek where as many of your bench players as possible have two fixtures. Never play it with an unresolved bench spot (injury doubt, potential rotation risk).
When should I play Triple Captain?
Triple Captain triples your captain's points instead of doubling them. Best used on a premium attacker with a Double Gameweek and two favourable fixtures, or a single standout fixture against a leaky defence. The advisor cross-references your squad's best captain candidate against the DGW/BGW calendar automatically.
Does Free Hit give you an extra free transfer?
No. Free Hit preserves your existing free-transfer count exactly - it does not add a bonus +1 on top. Your weekly free transfer credit was already applied entering the Free Hit gameweek, and your squad fully reverts to its pre-Free-Hit state the following week, carrying forward the same free-transfer count you had banked.
How many chips do I get in 2026/27?
The season runs a two-set chip system: Gameweeks 1-19 and Gameweeks 20-38 each get their own Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain. Unused chips from the first half do not carry into the second - they simply reset.
How does the Chip Strategy Advisor decide timing?
It works purely from fixture data - no team load required. It reads live fixture counts per gameweek from the FPL API to auto-detect Double and Blank Gameweeks the moment FPL announces them, then ranks chip timing scenarios (Wildcard now vs GW+1 vs GW+2, Free Hit variants) by expected value.
Is the Chip Strategy Advisor free?
The #1 recommendation is a free, honest teaser. The full gameweek-by-gameweek breakdown table and every other ranked scenario is a Pro feature.
